Server racks for harsh environments keep IT running where an office cabinet would fail. In production halls, workshops, warehouses, outdoor sites and vehicles, dust, water, heat and vibration reach the hardware and shorten its life.

Sealed IP54 and IP55 server cabinets keep dust and splash water out. Stainless steel versions resist corrosion and cleaning agents in food and process plants. Shock-resistant mobile racks protect equipment in transport and on the move, and compact edge computing cabinets bring IT close to machines and sensors.

Lehmann IT builds these cabinets in its own production in Salach, Germany, including made-to-measure versions. The questions below explain each type of protection.

Advisor: IP54 and IP55 server cabinets

The most important questions about server cabinets for harsh environments, answered briefly by Lehmann IT.

When do I need an IP54 cabinet?

Wherever dust, dirt or splash water meet IT, in manufacturing and production halls, workshops and warehouses. A normal server cabinet would draw in dust there and clog its fans.

IP54 or IP55?

Both are dust-protected. IP54 protects against splash water from all directions, IP55 additionally against water jets, important when cleaning is done with water.

Why stainless steel?

Brushed stainless steel meets high hygiene standards and is resistant to corrosive substances, ideal for the food industry and similar sectors.

How is it cooled?

Filtered ventilation keeps dust out. For higher heat loads, there are air-conditioned server cabinets, ask us about the right combination.

What do IP54 and IP55 mean?

The protection rating to EN 60529 consists of two digits: foreign bodies/dust and water. Hover over a digit.

5first digitDust-protected
4second digit (IP54)Splash water
5second digit (IP55)Water jets

How to choose a cabinet for harsh environments

  • Name the threat: dust, splash water, jets of water, corrosive cleaning agents, heat, cold or vibration each call for a different kind of protection.
  • Pick the protection class: the IP code states how well a cabinet keeps out solid particles and water, so match it to the real conditions on site.
  • Choose the material: powder-coated steel suits most halls, stainless steel suits food, chemical and outdoor sites where corrosion is a risk.
  • Plan the cooling: a sealed cabinet cannot breathe room air, so heat has to leave through a closed cooling system or a filtered fan unit.
  • Think about mobility: equipment that travels needs shock-absorbing mounts and a robust frame, not just a sealed housing.

Frequently asked questions

What do IP54 and IP55 mean?

The IP code describes protection against solids and water. The first digit 5 means the cabinet is protected against dust in amounts that would harm the equipment. The second digit 4 means protection against splash water from any direction, 5 means protection against water jets. Higher numbers mean stronger protection.

When is stainless steel the right choice?

Stainless steel resists corrosion, frequent cleaning and aggressive cleaning agents. It is the right choice in food and beverage production, in pharmaceutical and chemical plants, in damp rooms and outdoors where painted steel would rust over time.

How is a sealed cabinet cooled?

A sealed cabinet cannot exchange air freely with the room. Heat leaves through a closed-circuit cooling unit, an air-to-air heat exchanger or a fan unit with filters that keep dust out. The right choice depends on the heat load and on how dirty and warm the surroundings are.

What makes a server rack shock-resistant?

A shock-resistant rack mounts the 19-inch frame on dampers that absorb impacts and vibration, inside a robust outer housing. This protects servers and network devices during transport, on vehicles and in mobile deployments where a normal cabinet would pass every shock straight to the hardware.

What is an edge computing cabinet?

Edge computing places IT close to where data is created, for example next to machines, sensors or in a branch. An edge cabinet is a compact, often sealed enclosure that houses servers and network equipment on site, protected from the conditions around it.

Can a harsh-environment cabinet stand outdoors?

Yes, with the right protection class, material and climate control. Outdoor cabinets need protection against rain, sun, heat and cold, and often heating and cooling to keep the inside stable through the seasons.

Are made-to-measure versions possible?

Lehmann IT builds cabinets for harsh environments in its own production, so sizes, cut-outs, mounting and equipment can be adapted to machines, vehicles and special sites.
