Server rack fire protection and security protect the hardware and the data on it. A fire in the building, smoke, heat or unauthorised access can stop a business in minutes, and the IT is often the hardest part to replace.

A fire-resistant safety server cabinet shields the installed equipment from heat and smoke for a defined time, so systems and data survive a fire nearby. Rack monitoring adds the early warning: sensors watch temperature, humidity, doors and power, and report a problem before it becomes a failure.

Lehmann IT builds safety cabinets and custom enclosures in its own production in Salach, Germany. The questions below explain how fire protection and monitoring work in a server cabinet.

Advisor: Fire Protection in the Server Cabinet

The most common questions about fire-resistant server cabinets, answered briefly by Lehmann IT.

When is a fire protection server cabinet worthwhile?

Wherever there is an increased fire risk, above all in industry: production halls often have high temperatures, a lot of dust and sometimes highly flammable materials. There, the cabinet protects not only the equipment but also all the data on the servers.

What happens to IT in a fire?

Even small fires cause high costs: soot, corrosion and smoke often damage servers, routers and switches so badly that they can no longer be saved. A fire protection server cabinet gives you the time to back up your data.

How does the fire protection work?

The cabinets withstand fire for about 90 minutes and meet IP54. Sensors measure exhaust air temperature and smoke, if things become critical, all ventilation openings close immediately. The surface is highly chemical-resistant and insensitive to moisture.

What do EI 90 and A-s1,d0 mean?

EI 90 (EN 13501-2): 90 minutes of fire resistance for non-load-bearing walls. A-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1): the cabinet does not contribute to the fire, produces little smoke and does not drip burning material, the best rating in each case.

EDGE Computing Rack for data centers

For data centers: EDGE Computing

Fire-resistant enclosure with smoke-tight doors, about 90 minutes of fire resistance, low-temperature insulation, early fire detection and optional extinguishing technology: the EDGE Computing Rack.

IP54 cabinet against dust and water

Protection against dust

Dust clogs fans, hot spots develop and components fail. For harsh environments there are IP54 and IP55 cabinets.

Lockable 19-inch server cabinet

Protection against theft

All server cabinets are lockable, with a combination lock on request, important wherever many people have access.

How to plan fire protection and security

  • Assess the risk: note what could threaten the IT on site, such as fire from neighbouring rooms, heat, smoke, water from extinguishing or unauthorised access.
  • Decide what must survive: the value of the data and the cost of downtime show how much protection the cabinet needs.
  • Choose a certified safety cabinet when hardware must withstand fire and smoke for a defined time.
  • Add monitoring: sensors for temperature, humidity, doors and power give early warning and a record of what happened.
  • Control access: lockable doors and access logging keep the equipment out of reach of people who should not touch it.

Frequently asked questions

What does a fire-resistant server cabinet do?

A fire-resistant safety cabinet surrounds the installed IT with an insulated housing that keeps heat and smoke out for a defined time. If a fire breaks out nearby, the equipment inside stays within temperatures it can survive, which protects both the hardware and the data stored on it.

Is a fire-resistant cabinet the same as fire suppression?

No. A fire-resistant cabinet protects its contents from a fire outside. Fire suppression detects and fights a fire that starts inside the cabinet. Depending on the risk, one or both are useful, and they can be combined in one solution.

What does rack monitoring watch?

Rack monitoring uses sensors to watch temperature, humidity, door status, smoke and power. When a value leaves its range, the system sends an alarm, for example by email, so someone can react before a failure happens. The log also shows what happened afterwards.

Who needs a safety server cabinet?

Safety cabinets suit companies without a protected server room, branch offices, production sites and any place where IT stands in an area with an increased fire risk. They are also useful where data is critical and downtime would be very costly.

Can security features be added to a standard cabinet?

Many security features, such as locks, access control and monitoring, can be added to a standard server cabinet. Certified fire resistance, however, depends on the construction of the housing and has to be chosen from the start.

Does a safety cabinet also protect against water?

Water from firefighting or a burst pipe is a real risk for IT. Safety server cabinets with sealed housings keep extinguishing water and other water out of the equipment area. The protection levels for each model are listed on the product pages.

Can a safety cabinet be built to fit a special room?

Yes. Lehmann IT builds safety cabinets in its own production and can adapt dimensions, layout and equipment to the room and the hardware, from compact plug and play cabinets to individually planned solutions.
